Snow day!

It was snowing sideways all morning, and the skyline completely disappeared. Some very cool looking effects started when the snow stopped, the sun came out, and the snow appeared to be blowing right off the skyline.

On another note, snow days make me ponder deep thoughts like, “Which show is less funny, ‘According to Jim’ or ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’”? Thoughts?

I just listened to LCD Soundsystem’s “Someone Great” four times in a row. The lyrics are so bittersweet/melancholy, as is the video. They really captured that feeling of being around someone after the distance has grown between you. An anthem.

Tiny 2-D Ghost

I must share this extremely funny IM conversation about a dream my friend had about the world’s least scary ghost. (Some background: We’re going to a friend’s wedding in New Orleans in a couple of weeks, and the rehearsal dinner is in a hotel that apparently is haunted.)

A: omg so the evite gave me a nightmare about the least scary ghost ever
L: about the ghost?
A: yes
L: what happened?
A: i was in some room, and this tiny ghost with a monocle and a top hat was playing the piano, and then he started floating toward me and smiling
he was tiny
and really just a head
L: hehehehehe
A: and i started screaming bloody murder and saying don’t kill me don’t kill me
and i woke up and was saying don’t kill me in real life
L: whoa
A: cuz of the stupid tiny ghost in the hat
L: omg i’m crying
A: and he wasn’t even 3-D
L: 2-D mini ghost in a hat?
A: he was like a cutout from a magazine

YSL Pre-Fall Looks: Military, Aviation Influences…Plus Napoleon?

I love these looks from the Yves Saint Laurent pre-fall collection.

This one is a bit like a riding outfit, if you could ride in an enormous floppy hat without riding into a tree, post, or similar.

Getting a whiff of old Hollywood aviator influence in this one.

This is my favorite. I’m reading War and Peace and am therefore presently very interested in large Napoleonic hats.

Now you just stand there and think about what you’ve spilled on that gorgeous white coat.

Lovely. The time-tested saucy wench look, updated for the Aughts. (Have we settled on a name for this new decade we’re in, by the by?)

In resurrecting this blog, I’m struck again by how much my life has changed in one year. Just about everything I had written on my About page is no longer accurate. Then, I was a singleton in my early 30s, living with my little dog in New York and working for a children’s television program; now, I’m happily coupled up, living in Boston and running a magazine. And alas, my sweet pooch is no longer with us, but I’ve healed enough that my honey and I are visiting shelters and looking forward to bringing another dog home later this year. I have grown monumentally in the past year. What has happened to you since last April?

Vanity. I haz it.

My honey and I met some dear friends for dim sum at Hei La Moon in Chinatown today. We ate inordinate amounts of mochi, pork buns in delicious sweet pastry, and divine shrimp shu mai with a light sauce and scallions. Wait, I haven’t done the pork buns justice. Delicious barbecued pork inside fluffy light pastry that melts in your mouth. It’s like barbecue in the best donut on the planet. Oh my. And then as if the caloriefest at the dim sum palace was not enough, we went for bubble tea afterwards. Taro with black tapioca pearls, oh my heaven. Went for a promenade in the Public Garden afterwards, which was a good way to get the system back into gear after the major food influx.
